VDF and position fixing

(VDF)

Some aerodromes have VHF Direction Finding (VDF) equipment that senses the direction your ordinary VHF-COM voice signal arrives from. It needs no special kit in the aircraft, you just transmit, and the controller reads off a bearing. It is older and less precise than radar, but it can get you home or fix your position.
