The ear does two jobs: hearing and balance. Balance is your second most important sense after vision, and the source of the most dangerous illusions in flying, because the balance organs were built for slow movement on the ground at 1g, not for three-dimensional flight. The recurring lesson of this whole section: when the seat of your pants disagrees with your eyes and instruments, the instruments win.
