The Earth: shape, position and distance

For navigation you can treat the Earth as a sphere. Its true shape is an oblate spheroid: a sphere slightly flattened at the poles, so the polar diameter is about 23 nm less than the equatorial diameter. That flattening matters to geodesy and to the precise length of a nautical mile, but for plotting a VFR cross-country the sphere is good enough.
