Drag

(Principles of flight: drag)

Drag is the air resistance that opposes the aeroplane's motion, acting parallel to the relative airflow and in the same direction as it. It is the enemy: thrust exists mainly to overcome it, so the less drag you have, the less power you need, the less fuel you burn and the better the aeroplane performs. The exam treatment of drag rests on one curve, but you need to understand the two kinds of drag that build it.
