(Principles of flight: flaps and high-lift devices)

A wing that flies fast in the cruise is a poor wing for landing: to make enough lift at low speed it would have to be enormous. Flaps solve the conflict. They temporarily reshape the wing so it makes more lift at any given speed, letting you fly, approach and land slower, and descend more steeply. They are the most useful change of configuration you make on every flight.
