Getting a service: the UK FIS

Most of your flying is in Class G (the "Open FIR"), where no en-route control is required. You aren't forced to talk to anyone, but it is good airmanship to take a service. There are four UK Flight Information Services, and you must ask for the one you want.

The one rule that never changes

In Class F/G, whatever the service, you remain responsible for collision avoidance and terrain clearance. The services only assist you; they never take that responsibility away.
