The VOR and DME

The VOR (VHF Omnidirectional Range) is the workhorse short-range radio aid, adopted by ICAO in 1960. Each ground station transmits on a VHF frequency between 108.0 and 117.95 MHz, selected on your VHF-NAV radio. Because it is VHF, it is line-of-sight and largely free of the night effect and static that plague the lower-frequency NDB.
