PPL Buddy — Terms of Service
Effective date: 13 July 2026 Last updated: 13 July 2026
1. Who we are
PPL Buddy is operated by Rob Watkiss, trading as PPL Buddy ("PPL Buddy", "we", "us", "our") — a sole trader based in the United Kingdom. PPL Buddy is a study resource for the UK CAA Private Pilot Licence (Aeroplanes) — PPL(A) — theory exams, available on the web at pplbuddy.com and as an Android application (together, the "Service").

2. Acceptance of these terms
By creating an account, subscribing, or otherwise using the Service, you agree to these Terms of Service ("Terms") and to our Privacy Policy and Refund & Cancellation Policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the Service.
3. The Service
PPL Buddy provides study material for the UK PPL(A) theory syllabus: a written study guide, interactive visual aids, flashcards, practice questions and mock exams, plus utility tools (a live METAR/TAF weather decoder and flight-planning calculators). Some content is free; other content requires a paid subscription (see section 5).
We may add, change, or remove features, content, and tools over time to keep the material current and improve the Service.
4. Accounts
- Accounts are created and secured using a one-time code sent to your email address — there is no password to remember. You are responsible for keeping access to your email account secure.
- You must provide a valid email address and are responsible for activity under your account.
- Accounts are for a single individual. Do not share your account or login access with others (see section 6).
5. Subscriptions, billing and renewals
Free access. The Air Law subject is free in full — its study guide, flashcards, practice questions and mock exams — with no account required. The live METAR/TAF weather decoder and the flight-planning calculators are also free, and every other subject has a free taster (its opening section). Everything else requires a paid subscription.
Paid subscription. Full access to all subjects, flashcards, practice questions, mock exams and progress analytics requires a paid subscription:
- Monthly — £6.99 per month, or
- Annual — £69 per year.
Promotional/founder pricing (e.g. a discounted first month or a founder annual rate) may be offered from time to time; the applicable price and any promo terms are shown at checkout.
VAT / prices. The prices above are the total amount you pay — Rob Watkiss (trading as PPL Buddy) is not VAT-registered, so no VAT is added at checkout.
- Auto-renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period (monthly or annually) at the then-current price, using your saved payment method, until you cancel.
- Cancel anytime. You can cancel at any time through the billing/account portal (provided via our payment processor). When you cancel, your access continues until the end of the period you have already paid for, and it does not renew after that. See the Refund & Cancellation Policy.
- Payments. Payments are processed by Stripe. We do not receive or store your full card details.
- Price changes. We may change subscription prices. We will give you at least 30 days' advance notice, and any change will take effect from your next renewal, not mid-period. If you don't accept a new price, you can cancel before it takes effect.
- Failed payments. If a renewal payment fails, we may retry and may suspend paid access after a short grace period until payment succeeds.
6. Acceptable use
You agree not to:
- share, resell, sublicense, or provide account access to anyone else;
- copy, scrape, republish, distribute, or create derivative works from our content, except for your own personal study use;
- use automated means to bulk-download content or questions;
- reverse-engineer, decompile, or attempt to extract source code or the underlying question/content database, except to the limited extent the law permits;
- misuse the Service, interfere with its operation, or attempt to gain unauthorised access to it or to other users' accounts.
We may suspend or terminate access for breach of this section (see section 10).
7. Intellectual property
- The study guide, explanations, questions, flashcards, visual aids, tools, design, and PPL Buddy branding are owned by Rob Watkiss (trading as PPL Buddy) or its licensors and are protected by intellectual-property law.
- We grant you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable, revocable licence to access and use the content for your own study while your account (and, for paid content, your subscription) is active. This is a licence to use — not a transfer of ownership, and not permission to redistribute.
- Third-party content. Live weather charts are supplied via the Met Office (© Crown copyright) and live METAR/TAF data via third-party aviation-weather sources. That material belongs to its providers and is subject to their terms; we present it for study/planning reference only.
8. Educational disclaimer and limitation of liability — important, please read
This section reflects the disclaimer already shown in the Service and is central to how PPL Buddy may be used.
- PPL Buddy is a study aid, not an official source. It is not produced, endorsed, or approved by the UK Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), EASA, or any aviation regulator or training organisation. It is not official CAA examination material.
- Our content follows the PPL(A) study guide and CAA Learning Objectives to the best of our ability, but syllabus, regulations, and exam content change. You must verify anything you rely on against a current, authoritative reference (e.g. the current CAA/CAP publications, the ANO, official AICs/NOTAMs, and your Approved Training Organisation) before relying on it for a real flight or a real examination.
- No guarantee of outcomes. We do not guarantee that using PPL Buddy will make you pass any exam, and we are not responsible for exam results.
- Not operational or flight advice. The weather decoder, calculators, and all content are for study and general familiarisation only. They must not be used as the basis for actual flight planning, navigation, or in-flight decisions. Always use official, current sources and your own airmanship for real aviation decisions.
- "As is". The Service is provided on an "as is" and "as available" basis, without warranties of accuracy, completeness, or fitness for a particular purpose, to the fullest extent permitted by law.
- Limitation of liability. To the fullest extent permitted by law, Rob Watkiss (trading as PPL Buddy) is not liable for any loss or damage arising from: reliance on the content; exam results; any aviation, flight, or operational decision; or unavailability of the Service. Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes liability that cannot legally be limited or excluded — including liability for death or personal injury caused by negligence, for fraud, or your non-excludable rights as a consumer under UK law.
9. Third-party services
The Service relies on third parties to operate — including Stripe (payments), Supabase (accounts and data storage), Vercel (hosting), and weather-data providers. Your use of those parts may also be subject to those providers' terms. We are not responsible for third-party services outside our control.
10. Suspension and termination
- By you. You can stop using the Service at any time and cancel your subscription (section 5). You can request deletion of your account and data (see the Privacy Policy).
- By us. We may suspend or terminate your access if you breach these Terms (particularly section 6), if required by law, or if necessary to protect the Service or other users. Where reasonable and lawful, we will give notice. If we terminate for a reason that is not your fault (e.g. we withdraw the Service), we will refund the unused portion of any period you have already paid for on a pro-rata basis.
11. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. If we make material changes, we will take reasonable steps to notify you (e.g. by email or an in-app notice) before they take effect. Continuing to use the Service after changes take effect means you accept the updated Terms.
12. Governing law and jurisdiction
These Terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have jurisdiction. As a consumer, mandatory consumer-protection law of your own UK nation still applies to you.
